As you may have gathered, I love my motor-sport games. From the early days of racing cabinets in the arcades to the current state-of-the-art consoles - I've played a great many of them.

'TOCA' was released at the same time as F1 97 and, as much as I loved the F1 game, something about the handling dynamics of this game felt accurate. Having raced as an amateur on British circuits, TOCA's s physics for handling, braking and cornering was so realistic and sublime.

TOCA Touring Car Championship, released for the PlayStation in 1997, is a racing simulation game developed by Codemasters. The game is based on the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), offering a realistic and immersive experience for racing fans. TOCA was one of the first games to faithfully recreate a licensed motorsport series, featuring real teams, cars, and drivers from the 1997 BTCC season. It included iconic cars like the Honda Accord, Renault Laguna, and Ford Mondeo, along with tracks such as Donington Park and Silverstone.

The game was praised for its realistic handling and physics, which made it stand out from arcade-style racers. Players had to master the art of braking, cornering, and overtaking in a way that felt authentic to the sport. TOCA also featured a robust damage model, meaning collisions affected vehicle performance, adding to the realism. The game included a full championship mode, time trials, and multiplayer modes, allowing players to compete with friends.

TOCA Touring Car Championship was a critical and commercial success, setting a new standard for racing games on the PlayStation. Its focus on realism, combined with its official license, helped it become a favorite among racing enthusiasts and led to the development of sequels, including the TOCA series, which evolved into the Grid franchise.
