Toy Story for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) was released in 1995, developed by Traveller’s Tales and based on the hugely popular Pixar movie of the same name. The game follows the plot of the film, allowing players to control Woody, the cowboy doll, as he tries to help his owner Andy while navigating various challenges and dealing with other toys, particularly the rivalry with Buzz Lightyear.
The gameplay is primarily a side-scrolling platformer, but it features a variety of levels that change up the gameplay to keep it fresh. Players navigate Woody through levels inspired by key scenes from the movie, such as Andy's Room, Pizza Planet, and Sid's House, all while dealing with obstacles, enemies, and puzzles. The game mixes in different styles of play, including racing levels and first-person segments, such as one where you control RC, Andy's remote-control car, to chase down Buzz.
Visually, Toy Story stood out for its impressive graphics, which used pre-rendered 3D models to create detailed sprites, giving the game a distinct look that was advanced for the time. It closely mirrored the look of the movie, and the animation was praised for being smooth and well-executed. The music and sound effects, based on the film's soundtrack, also added to the immersive experience. While the game was relatively short and not overly difficult, it was well-received for its variety in level design, presentation, and faithful adaptation of the Toy Story movie.
